Design museum (Ghent)

Deze 100+ objecten maken deel uit van The Serving Library (TSL) (1), een collectie die als langdurige bruikleen is ondergebracht bij het Gentse collectief 019 (2). De enige gemeenschappelijke noemer van de objecten in deze verzameling – variërend van platenhoezen, aquarellen, houtsneden, polaroids, tekeningen, zeefdrukken, airbrush-schilderijen, tot een pot groene verf, een Duitse nummerplaat, een Ouija bord, … – is dat ze ooit gepubliceerd werden in een nummer van het tijdschrift The Serving Library Annual (3) of één van zijn voorgangers, Bulletins of The Serving Library (4) of Dot Dot Dot (5). Naast het tonen van de verzameling, opereert TSL als een mobiele seminarieruimte waarin lezingen en workshops gegeven worden aan studenten of geïnteresseerden. De collectie is tot september 2022 in de DING vitrine van Design Museum Gent te zien.

The Serving Library (TSL) is een non-profitorganisatie die fungeert als publicatieplatform, objectenverzameling en evenementen-/seminarieruimte. Het werd opgericht in 2011 in New York en wordt gerund door Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey, Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey, Vincenzo Latronico en David Reinfurt.
De verzameling startte in 2005 en bestond initieel uit 15 objecten. In een koffer werden ze van Amsterdam naar Tallinn vervoerd voor hun eerste presentatie in een vervallen ruimte zonder elektriciteit. Sindsdien groeide de collectie gestaag en circuleerde ze langs talrijke gastlocaties in Europa en Noord-Amerika.
In 2011 werd de groep werken opgenomen in TSL en meteen werd de collectie pedagogisch ingezet tijdens From the Toolbox of a Serving Library, een zes weken durende summerschool in het Banff Centre in Canada. In 2014 ging de verzameling aan wal in het Verenigd Koninkrijk (ze vult intussen vijf transportkisten) om opgehangen te worden in Tate Liverpool in een excentrieke structuur ontworpen door Claude Parent. Enkele jaren later verhuisde TSL naar haar eerste eigen ruimte in de India Buildings in dezelfde stad. Eind 2018 ging TSL in Bonington Gallery in Nottingham in dialoog met een interventie van de Engelse kunstenaar David Osbaldeston, die eveneens een werk heeft in TSL collectie (nr. 58). Sinds oktober 2020 heeft 019 de verzameling in langdurige bruikleen.

019 is een transdisciplinair platform dat tussenruimtes ontwikkelt voor intuïtief experiment, samenwerking en ontmoeting tussen architectuur, grafisch ontwerp en beeldende kunst. 019 laat steeds nieuwe mogelijkheden zien en doorbreekt gangbare manieren van tentoonstellen in artistieke en niet-artistieke ruimtes. Als een gastvrije bezetter nodigt 019 kunstenaars uit om het potentieel van deze ruimtes te onderzoeken en zichtbaar te maken. Vanuit een projectruimte in Gent, in de publieke ruimte en bij instellingen in binnen- en buitenland creëert 019 zo nieuwe raakvlakken tussen kunst en maatschappij.

The Serving Library Annual is een eclectisch cultureel tijdschrift dat eenmaal per jaar zowel online (gratis) als in gedrukte vorm verschijnt.

Bulletins of The Serving Library was een gedrukte/digitale publicatie uitgegeven door Dexter Sinister. Elk van de twaalf nummers bevat materiaal – originele essays, heruitgaven en kunstenaarsbijdragen – over een verscheidenheid aan thema’s zoals bibliotheken, media en tijd, onderwijs, typografie, psychedelica, Duitsland, mode, nummers, sport en spel, kleur, etc. Het magazine bestond van 2011 tot 2017 en was het vervolg op Dot Dot Dot.

Dot Dot Dot (DDD) was een tweejaarlijks, zelf gepubliceerd tijdschrift dat oorspronkelijk gericht was op grafisch ontwerp maar later verbreed naar interdisciplinaire journalistiek over onderwerpen die van invloed zijn op de manier waarop we naar de wereld kijken, hoe we over design denken en hoe we het maken. Geprezen om zijn gevatte teksten groeide DDD uit tot een semi-serieus tijdschrift rond diverse onderwerpen zoals kunstkritiek, muziek, taal, literatuur en architectuur. DDD werd uitgegeven, geredigeerd en vormgegeven door Peter Biľak en Stuart Bailey.

The Serving Library Objects

These 100+ objects are part of The Serving Library (TSL) (1), a collection that is on long-term loan to the Ghent-based collective 019 (2). The sole common denominator of the objects in this collection—which range from record sleeves, watercolours, woodcuts, polaroids, drawings, screen prints, airbrush paintings, to a can of green paint, a German license plate and a Ouija board—is that they were once published in an issue of The Serving Library Annual magazine (3) or one of its antecedents, Bulletins of The Serving Library (4) or Dot Dot Dot (5). In addition to exhibiting the collection, TSL operates as a mobile seminar space where lectures and workshops are given to students or anyone interested. The collection will be on display in the DING vitrine of Design Museum Ghent until September 2022.

The Serving Library (TSL) is a non-profit organisation that serves as a publishing platform, object collection, and event/seminar space. It was founded in 2011 in New York and is run by Francesca Bertolotti-Bailey, Stuart Bertolotti-Bailey, Vincenzo Latronico and David Reinfurt.The collection started in 2005 and initially consisted of 15 objects. In a suitcase they were transported from Amsterdam to Tallinn for their first presentation in a dilapidated space without electricity. Since then, the collection has gradually expanded and circulated among numerous guest venues in Europe and North America.In 2011, the group of works was incorporated into TSL and immediately the collection was put to pedagogical use during From the Toolbox of a Serving Library, a six-week summer school at the Banff Centre in Canada. In 2014, the collection landed in the UK (by now filling five shipping crates) to be hung at Tate Liverpool within an eccentric structure designed by Claude Parent. A few years later, TSL moved to its first space of its own in the India Buildings in the same city. In late 2018, the collection was installed at Bonington Gallery in Nottingham, in a visual dialogue with an intervention by English artist David Osbaldeston, who also has a work in TSL collection (no. 58). Since October 2020, 019 has the collection on long-term loan.

019 is a transdisciplinary platform that develops in-between spaces for intuitive experimentation, collaboration and encounter between architecture, graphic design and visual arts. 019 always shows new possibilities and challenges common ways of exhibiting in artistic and non-artistic spaces. Like a welcoming occupier, 019 invites artists to explore and make visible the potential of these spaces. From a project space in Ghent, in public space and at institutions in Belgium and abroad, 019 creates new interfaces between art and society.

The Serving Library Annual is an eclectic cultural journal published once a year both online (free) and in print.

Bulletins of The Serving Library was a print/digital publication published by Dexter Sinister. Each of the twelve issues contains material—original essays, reprints and artist contributions—on a variety of topics including libraries, media and time, education, typography, psychedelics, Germany, fashion, numbers, sports and games, colour, etc. The magazine existed from 2011 to 2017 and was the sequel to Dot Dot Dot.

Dot Dot Dot (DDD) was a bi-annual, self-published magazine that originally focused on graphic design but later broadened into interdisciplinary journalism on topics that affect the way we look at the world, how we think about design, and how we make it. Acclaimed for its witty writing, DDD matured into a jocuserious journal around diverse topics such as art criticism, music, language, literature and architecture. DDD was published, edited and designed by Peter Biľak and Stuart Bailey.
