Vlag #3: Josephine – Lisa Ijeoma

In haar tex­tie­lprak­tijk onder­zoekt Lisa Ijeoma haar inter­sec­ti­o­ne­le iden­ti­teit aan de hand van zowel uni­ver­se­le als per­soon­lij­ke ver­ha­len. Haar hand-genaai­­de patch­works en weef­sels geven een ant­woord op sys­te­mi­sche pro­ble­men zoals racis­me en dis­cri­mi­na­tie die men­sen van kleur vaak onder­vin­den. De vlag ​‘Josephine’ is geba­seerd op een foto­gra­fisch por­tret van Josephine Baker, arties­ten­naam van Freda Josephine McDonald (03.06.1906 – 12.04.1975), een ico­ni­sche zan­ge­res, actri­ce, dan­se­res en all­round per­for­mer. Baker was de eer­ste zwar­te vrouw die een hoofd­rol kreeg in een lang­speel­film (Siren of the Tropics, 1927). Daarnaast wei­ger­de ze stee­vast om voor een gese­gre­geerd publiek op te tre­den. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog deed ze spi­o­na­ge­werk voor het Franse ver­zet door haar posi­tie te gebrui­ken om inlich­tin­gen te ver­krij­gen. Na de oor­log wist ze als acti­vis­te te strij­den voor de rech­ten van Afro-Amerikanen en werd ze na het over­lij­den van Martin Luther King gevraagd om diens lei­den­de rol in de pro­test­be­we­ging over te nemen. Later adop­teer­de Baker 12 kin­de­ren uit alle delen van de wereld, waar­door ze de regen­boog­kin­de­ren wer­den genoemd. Haar inzet voor een recht­vaar­di­ge maat­schap­pij en haar strijd tegen racis­me zijn de geschie­de­nis inge­gaan als een voor­lo­per van de struc­tu­re­le zoek­tocht naar gelijk­heid. ​‘Josephine’ is Ijeoma’s inter­pre­ta­tie van de man­ne­lij­ke en kolo­ni­a­lis­ti­sche blik op zwar­te (vrouwen)lichamen tij­dens de her­op­le­ving van het exo­tis­me in 1920.

Off the Grid, het pre­sen­ta­tie­plat­form van Cas-co, instal­leer­de samen met het Gentse col­lec­tief 019 een vlag­gen­mast op de speel­plaats van Brede School Stroom. Deze mast van 20 meter vormt een per­ma­nen­te ten­toon­stel­lings­ruim­te in de open­ba­re ruim­te: elk jaar wor­den vier vlag­gen van onge­veer 54m² ont­wor­pen door kun­ste­naars die ver­bon­den zijn met de Leuvense sce­ne of Cas-com­­mu­­ni­­ty. Het pro­ject speelt actief in op de snel ver­an­de­ren­de omge­ving van de Vaartkom met al zijn indu­stri­eel erf­goed en nieuw­bouw­pro­jec­ten. De Leuvense vlag­gen rei­zen ver­vol­gens naar Gent en vice versa.

Flag #3: Josephine – Lisa Ijeoma

In her tex­ti­le prac­ti­ce, Lisa Ijeoma explo­res her inter­sec­ti­o­nal iden­ti­ty through both uni­ver­sal and per­so­nal nar­ra­ti­ves. Her hand-sewn patch­works and fabrics res­pond to sys­te­mic issues such as racism and dis­cri­mi­na­ti­on that peo­p­le of colour often face. The flag ​‘Josephine’ is based on a pho­to­grap­hic port­rait of Josephine Baker, sta­ge name of Freda Josephine McDonald (03.06.1906 — 12.04.1975), an ico­nic sin­ger, act­ress, dan­cer and all-round per­for­mer. Baker was the first black woman to get a lea­ding role in a fea­tu­re film (Siren of the Tropics, 1927). In addi­ti­on, she inva­ria­bly refu­sed to per­form for segre­ga­ted audien­ces. During World War II, she did spy work for the French resis­tan­ce by using her posi­ti­on to obtain infor­ma­ti­on. After the war, she mana­ged to fight for the rights of African-Americans as an acti­vist and was asked to take over Martin Luther King’s lea­ding role in the pro­test move­ment after his death. Later, Baker adop­ted 12 child­ren from all parts of the world, refer­ring to them as the rain­bow child­ren. Her com­mit­ment to a fair soci­e­ty and her fight against racism have gone down in his­to­ry as a forerun­ner of the struc­tu­ral quest for equa­li­ty. ​‘Josephine’ is Ijeoma’s inter­pre­ta­ti­on of the male and colo­ni­a­list view of black (women’s) bodies during the 1920s revi­val of exoticism.

Off the Grid, Cas-co’s pre­sen­ta­ti­on plat­form, instal­led a flag­po­le on the playground of Brede School Stroom together with the Ghent col­lec­ti­ve 019. This 20-metre mast forms a per­ma­nent exhi­bi­ti­on spa­ce in public spa­ce: eve­ry year, four flags of about 54m² are desig­ned by artists con­nec­ted to the Leuven sce­ne or Cas-com­mu­ni­ty. The pro­ject acti­ve­ly res­ponds to the rapid­ly chan­ging envi­ron­ment of the Vaartkom with all its indu­stri­al heri­ta­ge and new con­struc­ti­on pro­jects. The Leuven flags will then tra­vel to Ghent and vice versa.
