Every Island

I.C.W. Cas-co & Off the Grid

25/02/2023 – 31/05/2023

019 and Off the Grid, Cas-co’s presentation platform installed a new flagpole in the playground of Brede School Stroom. This 20-metre pole creates a permanent exhibition space in the public space for a growing archive of the largest Belgian artists’ flags. Every year, four flags of about 54m² are designed by artists connected to the Leuven scene or Cas-co community. The project ties in with the rapidly changing environment of the Vaartkom with all its industrial heritage and new construction projects.

The first flag in this series was designed by Every Island and will be on display until May 2023.
Every Island is a design collective based in Brussels that explores performativity in space through ephemeral architectures and installations.
They use ambiguity as a design tool and consider space as a scenography for transitions, roles, stages and meanings. Within each project, materiality is conceived as a reminiscence of hidden memories, images, sensations.
Every Island was formed in early 2021 by Alessandro Cugola (Verona, 1993), Caterina Malavolti (Milan, 1992), Damir Draganić (Sarajevo, 1991), Juliane Seehawer (Berlin, 1989), Martina Genovesi (Milan, 1991).
During their residency at Off the Grid, Every Island approached the maintenance of space as a repetitive act. Within the absurdity of such an act, a non-existent image is enacted and performed. In this process, we can experience apathy, but also intimacy, and the link with the human body. Within this invisible action, an almost intangible but mutual exchange is established.
