#025 & OTHER FLAGS at Lentekabinet ’24

For the eleventh edition of Lentekabinet, Dekmantel invited a variety of international and local artists. This year the program is partly developed in collaboration with Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond. 019 is participating in Lentekabinet with our big flagpole, #025, and our flag-archive will be on display all over the festival’s site.

Flags are a given at most festivals; they have the ability to connect, to announce something, give a warning or unite people. But who creates these signs and what stories do they tell? Since 2016, a Ghent-based artist collective 019 has invited artists to create flags for their massive flagpole. This pole, probably the largest in Europe, became a kind of mobile exhibition space. At Lentekabinet, more than twenty different flags from the archives of 019 will pop up all over the festival terrain.

Dekmantel’s annual festival touches down just north of Amsterdam, on the lush grounds of Het Twiske. It’s a two-day affair where you can reunite and reconnect: with music, with the arts, with nature and—through all of the above—with each other.

Voor de elfde editie van Lentekabinet heeft Dekmantel een diverse groep internationale en lokale kunstenaars uitgenodigd. Dit jaar is het programma gedeeltelijk ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond. 019 neemt deel aan het festival met #025, onze grote vlaggenmast, en het vlaggenarchief zal overal op het festivalterrein te zien zijn.

Vlaggen zijn een bekende op de meeste festivals; ze hebben de kracht om te verbinden, iets aan te kondigen, te waarschuwen of mensen te verenigen. Maar wie creëert deze tekens en welke verhalen vertellen ze? Sinds 2016 heeft het in Gent gevestigde kunstenaarscollectief 019 kunstenaars uitgenodigd om vlaggen te maken voor hun indrukwekkende vlaggenmast. Deze mast, waarschijnlijk de grootste in Europa, werd een soort mobiele tentoonstellingsruimte. Op Lentekabinet zullen meer dan twintig verschillende vlaggen uit de archieven van 019 overal op het festivalterrein opduiken.

Het jaarlijkse festival van Dekmantel strijkt neer net ten noorden van Amsterdam, op het weelderige terrein van Het Twiske. Het is een tweedaags evenement waar je kunt herenigen en verbinden: met muziek, met kunst, met natuur en – door dit alles heen – met elkaar.
