Hussein Shikha – ‘Huriya, Huriya, Huriya, Huriya’

Hussein Shikha combineert traditionele motie­ven en het rij­ke erfgoed van Zuid-Irakese tapijten tex­tiel­ fa­bri­ca­ge met moderne technologie. Hussein neemt de per­ soon­lij­ke erva­ring van het navi­ge­ren door ont­heem­ding en dias­po­ri­sche cul­tu­re­le iden­ti­teit als uitgangspunt. Zijn vlag Huriya, wat vrijheid betekent in het Arabisch, combi­neert de geschie­de­nis van vroege com­pu­ter­ tech­no­lo­gie en pixels met het maken van tapij­ten.

Hussein Shikha combines traditional motifs and the rich heritage of South Iraqi carpet and textile fabrication with modern technology. Hussein takes the personal experience of navigating displacement and diasporic cultural identity as his starting point. His flag Huriya, meaning freedom in Arabic, combines the history of early computer technology and pixels with carpet-making.
