Ancient navigators and coastal peoples, when faced with the sea, with all its extension and depth, projected their fears in imaginary ways, creating creatures that inhabited these mysterious spaces. They are Kraken, Aspidochelone, Leviathan, Makara, Jörmungandr, Charybdis, Scylla. Monstrous figures with diverse names that appear in all cultures and mythologies, created to project on them the same fear: the fear of the unknown. If the sea represents the unknown, the strange, the ‘other’, these marine figures would be its incarnation, the personifications of otherness.

Hydra, like the mythical polycephalic sea monster, unfolds as a site-specific sculptural sound and video installation by the artists Ra Asensi (Bilbao, 1989), Inés García (Bilbao, 1983) and Iván Gómez (Irún, 1984), and presents us with a living body circulated by water to which we can look in order to rethink our understanding of difference and connection
