Adrien Tirtiaux – DAS TROJANISCHE DING at LLS

Tentoonstelling van 16 maart tot en met 31 mei 2026

Een monumentale houten sculptuur vult en vergroot de hoofdruimte van LLS Paleis. Scharnieren verbinden verschillende delen van de grootschalige houten structuur, waardoor deze in principe verplaatsbaar is. Maar omdat het object de hele ruimte in beslag neemt, lijkt het alsof het helemaal geen bewegingsruimte heeft. Het ‘ding’ is net iets te groot voor de ruimte. Het verlegt de grenzen en eist daarmee als het ware dat de locatie wordt uitgebreid. Het steekt uit voorbij de rand van de façade en creëert een kleine luifel boven het voetpad van de locatie. Met deze eigenschap verandert het beeldhouwwerk tijdelijk niet alleen de expositieruimte, maar ook de openbare ruimte ervoor. Het biedt beschutting tegen regen en zon en nodigt mensen uit om te blijven hangen.

Met DAS TROJANISCHE DING maakt Adrien Tirtiaux gebruik van de interventie van John Körmeling uit 2020. Voor het project OPEN RAAM verwijderde Körmeling het voorraam van LLS Paleis en verving het door een beweegbare constructie waardoor de hele voorkant van de ruimte kan worden geopend. In 2023 reageerden de kunstenaars van 019 op het werk van Körmeling door er nog een raamwerk in te plaatsen, diagonaal. Hierdoor ontstond een nieuwe toegangssituatie bij LLS Paleis, waarbij een deel van de tentoonstellingsruimte tijdelijk werd omgevormd tot een driehoekige, semi-openbare voortuin. Het was altijd al de bedoeling om dit raam op een gegeven moment terug te brengen naar 019. Bij de bouw van DAS TROJANISCHE DING besloot Tirtiaux het raam in zijn sculptuur te verwerken en zo uiteindelijk terug te brengen naar 019, samen met hun “upcycled” houtafval.

Binnenin DAS TROJANISCHE DING, of: Wat gebeurt er in de buik van de walvis?

De sculptuur is ontworpen als een open ruimte voor verschillende soorten activiteiten. Als sociale sculptuur worden kunstenaars en organisaties uitgenodigd om in en rond het werk optredens, tentoonstellingen of evenementen te organiseren. De naam van het project doet denken aan een paard. De vorm van de toegankelijke houten structuur daarentegen lijkt meer op een ander dier, namelijk een walvis. Als je het binnengaat, roept het misschien het verhaal van Jona en de walvis op. In dit verhaal staat het verblijf in de buik van de walvis voor een moment van contemplatie.

DAS TROJANISCHE DING verhuist 01.06.2026

In tegenstelling tot wat gebruikelijk is, vindt er op de laatste dag van de tentoonstelling bij LLS Paleis geen finissage plaats. In plaats daarvan wordt het project de volgende dag voortgezet met een moment van cruciaal belang: op 1 juni wordt de sculptuur uit de tentoonstellingsruimte gerold en op een vrachtwagen geladen. Het object is precies ontworpen om in de ruimte te passen, waardoor het verplaatsen ervan een hele klus is: Tirtiaux heeft de sculptuur zo ontworpen dat het kan worden getransporteerd als een standaardcontainer van 260 cm hoog, 244 cm breed en 1200 cm lang.

A monumental wooden sculpture fills and extends the main space of LLS Paleis. Hinges connect different parts of the large scale timber structure, making it potentially movable. Yet, as it occupies the whole space, the object appears to have no room to move at all. The “Thing” is just a bit too big for the space. It pushes its boundaries, thereby virtually demanding that the site expand. Sticking out beyond the building’s front edge, it creates a little awning above the venue’s public sidewalk. With this feature, the sculpture temporarily alters not only the gallery space, but also the public space in front of it. Offering shelter from rain and sun, it invites people to linger.

With DAS TROJANISCHE DING, Adrien Tirtiaux takes up- and makes use of an intervention by John Körmeling made in the space in 2020. For the project called OPEN RAAM, Körmeling removed LLS Paleis’ front window and replaced it with a movable construction that allows the entire front of the space to be opened. In 2023, the artists of 019 responded to Körmeling’s work by inserting into it yet another window frame, diagonally. This created a new entrance situation at LLS Paleis, with part of the exhibition space being temporarily turned into a triangular, semi-public front yard. It was always planned to return this window to 019 at some point. Building DAS TROJANISCHE DING, Tirtiaux decided to incorporate it into his sculpture and thus eventually bring it back to 019, together with their “upcycled” wood waste.

Inside DAS TROJANISCHE DING, or: What happens in the belly of the whale?

The sculpture is designed as an open space for various activities and uses. As a social sculpture, artists and organisations are invited to stage performances, exhibitions or community events within and around the work. The project’s name evokes a horse. The shape of the accessible wooden structure, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of another animal, namely a whale. Entering it may therefore recall the story of Jonah and the Whale. In this narrative, the stay in the whale’s belly represents a moment of contemplation.

DAS TROJANISCHE DING moves out 01.06.2026

Unlike usual, there will be no finissage on the exhibition’s closing day at LLS. Instead, the project continues the following day with a moment of crucial importance: On June 1st, the sculpture will be taken out of the exhibition space and loaded onto a lorry. Precisely designed to fit the dimensions of the space, the whole endeavour of moving it is a tight fit: Tirtiaux conceived the object to be collapsible into the shape of a standard-compliant container, which measures 260 cm in height, 244 cm in width and 1200 cm in length.
